Sr.Adeline Benimana

My Vocation Story

I am Sr. Adeline BENIMANA, a Rwandese and a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, commonly known as a Salesian Sister of Don Bosco. I grew up in a Christian family, where from a young age, I learned Christian prayers and values.

As a child, I often saw priests and religious sisters visiting our family. During holidays, my siblings and I would spend time in the convent. However, I never felt particularly drawn to religious life. In Grade 4, I felt a deep desire to become a religious as a thanksgiving to Mama Mary. My family had a strong devotion to Our Lady, believing that she protected and provided for us.

Sports were a big part of my life. I played volleyball, football, athletics, cultural games, modern dance, and even a bit of traditional dance during my primary school years. When I started high school, I was selected among the best in athletics and football. The desire for religious life faded as I became more involved in women’s football clubs—not only in school but also at the regional and national levels.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit’’ John 15:16

Despite my passion for sports, I remained a leader in many Catholic groups at school and in the parish. As I approached the end of high school, the call to religious life returned, stronger than before. However, I ignored it because of peer influence, the fame I was gaining, and the encouragement from my coaches.

In my final year of high school, my headmaster challenged five of us, including me, by refusing to let us participate in a tournament that required us to be away from school for two weeks. I was deeply disappointed because the winners would have had the opportunity to join the national women’s football team. At that moment, I realized that my goals and passion for football were not leading me where I truly wanted to be.

For two weeks, I spent time in silent reflection. The desire to become a religious returned even more strongly. During this time, I met the Salesian Sisters, who were actively involved in youth ministry, parish visits, and school outreach programs.

I admired their way of life—their interaction with young people, their love, openness, and especially their enthusiasm for animating games. I felt drawn to their mission. I started communicating with them and visiting their communities. With the encouragement and support of my family, I finally answered God’s call. I made my first profession in 2013 and my perpetual vows in 2019.
